It turns out that this one room schoolhouse has a particularly unique history. Though it closed in the 1930s, it was quickly sold and converted into a seasonal museum by former pupils. This early action resulted in a collection of ephemera and photographs of teachers from the 1800s to the 20th century.

Today, the school is open occasionally in the summer.

Built in 1851 and in operation through the 1940s, the Enfield Center School is a rare two story school building type in New Hampshire. Before its acquisition by the Enfield Historical Society in 1983, the building was owned by the Earnest Workers Club, a local organization that raised money for charitable causes.

Today, the building is headquarters for the Enfield Historical Society and is open on select days in the summer.

West canaan 4-H Clubhouse

Mascoma Valley Preservation is helping the 4-H club to list this schoolhouse to the NH State Register of Historic Places. Official designation is expected in January 2025.

The West Canaan School was built in c.1870 and closed in 1952. Since then, it has housed the local 4-H chapter — one of the only known chapters in New Hampshire with a permanent clubhouse. You might know the schoolhouse for its popular annual chicken pie supper, held in November.
